It started as a so-so day, when I stumbled upon this page: Replacing World Landmarks With Cheap Souvenirs. Such a mood-lifter.

Miracle on the Hudson
This is how it happened, according to cnn, yahoo and abc:
US Airways Flight 1549 carrying 155 passengers took off from N.Y.'s LaGuardia Airport for Charlotte, N.C., and shortly after collided with a flock of birds, causing an explosion on the left wing of the plane. Pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III who helmed the flight thankfully managed to land the plane on the cold Hudson River. A few minutes later, ferries, the Coast Guard, and other boats came to the rescue. According to some passengers, they were on the verge of panic, but somehow, some people took leadership and calmed everyone down, and they decided to evacuate the women and children first.
Everyone survived. Well done, everyone!
Thank God there are still miracles.

Backtracks
I'm eagerly anticipating the new season of American Idol. (I can't believe how much I missed the show until I heard the AI intro song on TV!) And in case you're wondering why I like the show so much, here are some of my (Seasons 1-6) reasons:
1. Kelly Clarkson - Natural Woman
Give it up for the first Idol!
2. Tamyra Gray - A House Is Not A Home
This was a pretty good performance, very impressive.
3. Ruben Studdard - A Whole New World
Idol worthy!
3. Clay Aiken - To Love Somebody
Clay was in the zone!
4. Jasmine Trias - Inseparable
Surprisingly, I liked this one. Tender yet passionate.
5. Jennifer Hudson - I Have Nothing
Nice!
6. Carrie Underwood - Alone
I absolutely love this performance! Fit for an Idol.
7. Bo Bice - In A Dream
Wonderful performance, great vocals
8. Anwar Robinson - I'll Never Love This Way Again
I watch this one all the time. I can't help myself!
9. Vonzell Solomon - Don't Leave Me This Way
I love this rendition
10. Anthony Fedorov - Everytime You Go Away
Nice!
11. Constantine Maroulis - Bohemian Rhapsody
One word: Amazing!
12. Mario Vazquez - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Goosebumps!
13. Taylor Hicks - Do I Make You Proud
Good one from Idol #5
14. Katharine McPhee - Somewhere Over The Rainbow
McPheever!
15. Elliott Yamin - A Song For You
Wow!
16. Chris Daughtry - Dead or Alive
Daughtry! Need I say more?
17. Jordin Sparks - I Who Have Nothing
A great reason why Jordin is Idol #6
18. Blake Lewis - You Give Love A Bad Name
I was kind of worried when he started, he was taking a huge risk with this one. It turned out great!
19. Melinda Doolittle - Have a Nice Day
Great voice, great night -- Bon Jovi Night
20. LaKisha Jones - Aint a Love Song
Another Bon Jovi Night Hit
21. Phil Stacey - Blaze of Glory
Also a good one.
22. Sanjaya Malakar - Besame Mucho
Give Sanjaya some credit, this was cool. I laughed out loud when Simon gave his review: "It was not... horrible." Hahaha!
I'm looking forward to a great new season!

How not to get sea sick
I went to my hometown for the Christmas break. While the family gathering was fun, the trip back could have been a lot better.
I traveled by boat on my way back, and I (thankfully) slept through most of the trip. I woke up feeling a little dizzy sometime later though, as I felt that the boat was being tossed by huge waves. I wasn't expecting any turbulence at all, the sea was calm when the boat left the port (I jokingly told myself that if I were Jesus, I would have commanded the wind and the waves to be still at that point.)
The other passengers were getting seasick, and having experienced the same thing many times before, I resolved to conquer the blasted thing. I usually take a pinch of salt with me when I travel, because someone once told me that salt helps prevent nausea. So I ingested a little amount of salt and it helped a little, as I was getting a bit nauseous then.
My martial arts teacher taught me that breathing is key when performing a great technique, so I decided that it might help me. So, every time the wave moved up (on the way to a crest), I took a deep breath in, and then out, whenever the wave moved down (on the way to a trough). I repeated the cycle until at last, after what felt like a very long stretch (actually it was a little more than an hour), we reached the port. Whew! Thankfully, the breathing exercise worked, and I got off the boat still able to walk a straight line and feeling a bit triumphant for not giving in to seasickness. I was so glad to be on terra firma.
Why am I chronicling this? So I could remember this technique the next time I travel.
[As an aside, I got some information regarding seasickness prevention here and here.]

Do you know what "Absquatulate" means?
According to the geek on this site, it means: "to leave without warning". So there. :)
